Brassicas with aromatic herbs
Plant strong-smelling herbs among your cabbages and you may see less caterpillar damage. One university trial found that with thyme. Nobody has shown exactly why, and plenty of trials find nothing at all.

Carrots, onions and dill
Onions planted through the carrots throw the carrot rust fly off the scent, so fewer maggots reach the roots. A dill border gives you something to cut for the table.

The hubbard ring
Circle your cucumbers with hubbard squash. The beetles much prefer it, so they crowd onto the ring and mostly leave the cucumbers, and the wilt they carry, alone. You still clear them off. The ring just gathers them.
