A container dries out faster than the same plant in the ground, and it is the one place where a day's inattention can cost you the plant.

How it works

A container holds a small fixed volume of soil, its whole root zone sits above ground rather than connected to the soil below, and a porous pot loses water from its sides as well as its surface. The reservoir is smaller and it empties faster.

What to do about it

Check a container at least once a day, and twice when it is hot, dry or windy - in high summer it may genuinely need water more than once a day. A plastic pot holds moisture longer than an unglazed clay one, and a bigger pot longer than a small one.

How much it matters: Not quantified as a ratio by any source read. The sources give a checking cadence and an upper bound on watering frequency in hot weather, not a drying rate or a comparison figure against open ground - that would depend on pot size, material, exposure and weather, none of which this rule models. Deliberately left unquantified.

The second mechanism, which is why the remedy names pot material: 'Clay pots and other porous containers allow additional evaporation from the sides of the pots and watering must be done more often.' The cadence: 'Check containers at least once a day and twice on hot, dry or windy days', and 'Daily or even twice-daily watering may be necessary.' [read]

NOT CITED, AND RECORDED SO IT IS NOT RE-SOUGHT: a web search attributed the drying-rate claim to UMD Extension's 'Maintaining Container Grown Vegetables'. The page was opened and it makes NO comparison between containers and ground and offers NO mechanism - it says only that frequency 'will vary based on the plant type, the size of the plant, and size of the container'. This is the second misattributed quote in this arc (the first was a UC IPM page that did not contain the root-growth sentence credited to it). A quote is not a source until the page has been opened.

Where this rule stops

This says a container needs CHECKING more often, not how much water to give it - that is still a weather question and it is still refused. Nothing here is a watering schedule: the cadence is for looking at the soil, which is the same act the refusal in this section recommends, done more often because the reservoir is smaller.
