Garden folklore - moon planting, midday watering, and talking to your plants

Three old beliefs that cost nothing to hold - except the one that leaves a wilting plant unwatered in a heatwave. What's actually known about each.

What you need

The remedies in the soil myths and homemade pest guides are about doing something - burying, spraying, mixing. This guide is about three beliefs concerning when you garden and how you behave around plants, which is a gentler category and mostly a harmless one.

Mostly. One of them regularly stops people watering a plant that needs water.

As with the other two guides, each of these is recorded as not yet confirmed against sources - the reasoning is held, the citations haven't been read back by a human.

The one that costs you something: midday watering

Watering plants in the midday sun scorches the leaves (water droplets focus sunlight like lenses).

Watering in the midday sun won't scorch your leaves — droplets don't focus light onto the leaf, and they evaporate before they could. Water whenever the plant needs it — but aim at the soil rather than the leaves, because wet foliage invites fungal disease. Morning or evening just wastes less to evaporation.

what is actually known

Water droplets on a leaf do not focus sunlight into a burn. A droplet's focal point sits below the leaf surface, not on it, and on a flat leaf the droplet evaporates long before it could do damage — controlled trials find no scorching on smooth leaves. (Densely hairy leaves that hold a droplet above the surface are a rare theoretical exception, not the everyday lawn-and-veg case.) The real reason to prefer morning or evening watering is that far less is lost to evaporation in the heat of the day — an efficiency point, not a scorch risk. There is a second real reason, and it is about WHERE the water goes rather than when: a film of water on a leaf is what a fungal spore needs to germinate, which is why the soil is a better target than the foliage whatever the hour.

Penn State Extension, 'Garden Myths: Watering', extension.psu.edu/garden-myths-watering (fetched in-container 2026-08-02, READ AND CONFIRMED BY THE MAINTAINER 2026-08-02 as another rule here's third pointer): 'Leaf damage can occur due to many causes: too much or too little moisture, insect damage, disease, over-fertilization, and weather conditions such as wind or frost, not sun scorching.' It says nothing about a droplet's focal point and cites no controlled trial, so the first two pointers above remain general knowledge and this belief stays `unverified` — the status describes the whole claim, not its best-supported part. This is the most widely-believed piece of garden physics there is, and it's wrong on the physics.

The claim is that water droplets act as lenses, focusing sunlight and burning the leaf. They don't. A droplet's focal point sits below the leaf surface, not on it - so there's nothing to concentrate light onto - and on a flat leaf the droplet evaporates long before it could do anything anyway. Why this one matters more than the others: it changes what you do at the worst possible moment. It's 34°C93°F, a plant is visibly wilting, and the gardener decides to wait until evening rather than risk scorching the leaves. The scorch was never possible. The drought stress was.

The one with nothing behind it: planting by the moon

Planting by lunar phase improves germination and yield.

No mechanism, no trials. Plant when the soil is warm and the frost risk has passed.

The corpus's entry on this is four words long, and the brevity is the point: no mechanism, no trials.

That's worth unpacking, because "no mechanism" is a specific and fairly damning thing to say. The moon does move the oceans, so the idea isn't absurd on its face - but tidal force scales with the mass of the thing being pulled, and a seed in a seedbed is not an ocean. Nobody has proposed a route by which the moon's phase reaches a germinating seed, and nobody has run the trials that would let us skip the mechanism and just look at outcomes.

What actually governs germination isn't mysterious, and it's measurable: soil temperature, and whether the frost risk has passed. Those are the two things the planting calendar is built on, and they're why a calendar keyed to your own frost dates beats one keyed to anything else.

If you enjoy planting by the moon, it costs nothing - it's a schedule, and any schedule gets you outside on a regular basis. Just let the soil thermometer overrule it.

The one that works for the wrong reason: talking to your plants

Contested

Talking to your plants, or playing them music, makes them grow better.

Talking to or playing music for your plants won't grow them faster on its own — but the attention that comes with it will, because you'll spot thirst, pests, and shade sooner. Do it if you enjoy it; then act on what you notice.

There is no reliable, reproducible effect. The occasional positive result is explained by the attention that comes with it — someone who talks to their plants tends to notice thirst, pests, and light problems sooner. The proposed physical mechanisms (a trace of exhaled CO2, sound vibration) are far too small to matter against normal air and wind. Harmless, and the extra attention is genuinely good for the plants.

There's no reliable, repeatable effect from talking to plants or playing them music. The proposed physical mechanisms - a trace of exhaled carbon dioxide, sound vibration - are far too small to matter against normal air movement and wind.

But this is the entry to read closely, because the correction doesn't end at "no".

The occasional positive result is real, and it has an explanation: the attention. Someone who talks to their plants is someone who's regularly close to their plants, looking at them. They notice thirst a day earlier. They spot aphids while it's still ten aphids. They see that the light is wrong before the plant has stretched.

So the practice genuinely goes with better outcomes, by a mechanism that has nothing to do with sound and everything to do with how often you look. That's not a debunking so much as moving the credit where it belongs.

Do it if you enjoy it. Then act on what you noticed while you were there.

Why keep these at all

None of these three is dangerous the way sand-in-clay or dish soap is. Two are entirely harmless, and the third only costs you on a hot afternoon.

They're recorded anyway, and kept in the record rather than deleted, for the same reason everything else here is: a claim that was checked and failed is worth more to you than one nobody checked. Deleting the moon-planting entry wouldn't make the belief go away - it would just mean the next gardener who meets it has no way to find out whether anyone looked.

And the three of them together map the whole range this site deals in. One is wrong and it changes what you do. One is unsupported and inert. One is unsupported, but the habit wrapped around it is genuinely good for the plant. Very little garden advice is simply true or simply false, and sorting out which kind you're holding is most of the skill.
