How it works
A self-unfruitful tree will not set a normal crop from its own pollen or the pollen of another tree of the same cultivar; it needs pollen from a genetically different, compatible cultivar, carried by bees while both trees are in bloom. That is why the partner must be a different cultivar, must bloom at the same time, and must stand within a bee's working range - and why a self-fruitful species like peach or sour cherry, whose own pollen sets fruit, bears alone.
What to do about it
Check the pollination requirement before buying. For apple and pear, plant two different cultivars with overlapping bloom - early- and late-blooming cultivars may miss each other, and for apple a flowering crabapple that blooms at the same time also serves. For European plum, pair with a second European plum cultivar, not a Japanese or hybrid plum. Site partner trees close together - within 50 to 100 feet where you can, within 300 feet at most. A peach or sour cherry needs no partner.
How much it matters: No figure is invented. The magnitude is the sources': a self-unfruitful tree alone 'will not set a normal crop' - apples set at most a small crop on their own pollen - and the two planting distances (within 50 to 100 feet; within 300 feet) are both published figures, both carried, neither chosen. Because cultivar choice at planting is the gardener's own decision and the app cannot see what grows in neighbouring yards, the rule advises rather than warns.

It surfaces on those species pages and can be cited by the fruit guides; it gates nothing and docks no score - the engine cannot see cultivar identity in a plan, or the crabapple in a neighbour's yard, so a hard gate would be dishonest. HONESTY NOTES: (1) sour cherry was expected to need a pollinizer and the sources REVERSED that - all three call sour/tart cherry self-fruitful, so it stands with peach in the plant-alone group. (2) Iowa says apples 'will set a small crop with their own pollen' while Penn State says cross-pollination is always needed for an adequate crop - a small crop is not an adequate one, so the claim says a lone tree will not set a NORMAL crop. (3) The two planting distances differ (50-100 ft Iowa, 300 ft Illinois); both are carried, neither is chosen. (4) For plum the per-crop line wins over the blanket one: Penn State's half-and-half covers plums at large, Iowa's partially-to-entirely-self-fruitful is specifically EUROPEAN plum, which is the corpus species. Sweet cherry and Japanese plum are not in the corpus; their requirements are recorded only as the warning that they cannot pollinate European plums. Fig is deliberately LEFT OUT: none of these sources covers it and its pollination biology is a different mechanism entirely - it stays rule-silent until sourced on its own terms. This rule is about the POLLEN SOURCE (a compatible partner cultivar); attracting the bees that carry it is the separate insectary mechanism.
